How to Use
Below are some different ways (I know about) that MATHGYM is being used in schools. Whatever system you decide to use it is valuable to get the students to keep a record of their progress in a Log Book. In this book they should record their thinking and solutions and any theory they have learnt.
Ways that MATHGYM Is Being Used:
- In class time - Students are given time in Mathematics lessons to work through each of the SETs. This occurrs in a block of lessons at a particular stage in their course, or as a regular (once a fortnight say) lesson in their cycle. Either the whole class uses the Tutorial or only certain members of the class do. Students who have internet access at home continue to work on the Tutorial at any time that suits them.
- Full Class Use - During a Mathematics lesson, the whole class logs on to MATHGYM. In a 50 minute lesson (say) the students work on the Problem solving for the first 35 minutes and then in the final 15 minutes the teacher allows them to play some of the on-site games in the ARCADE (logic games or the MATHGYMINVADERS game which develops proficiency with number facts). During the first part of the lesson the teacher works with students who may initially need support and encouragement to gain success with Problem Solving. In some classes, mathematically able students use the Tutorial while others in the class practice their number facts on MATHGYMINVADERS.
- Part Class Use - Those students in the class who are ready for enrichment are encouraged to work the tutorial while the remainder of the class works with the teacher doing consolidation/remediation type tasks.
- Small Group/Individual Use - Those students in the class who are ahead in their work and ready for enrichment are encouraged to work the tutorial while the remainder of the class works with the teacher completing the Topic.
- Out of class time - Students are introduced to the tutorial in a Mathematics lesson and then are provided with access to the tutorial outside class time - before school, at lunch break, after school, and at home. The teacher monitors their progress by regularly reviewing each student's Log Book.
- On retreat - Some schools are using MATHGYM to provide supported and accessible Mathematics tuition when students are away from the school's resources for an extended time - at camps, touring, or even when a student is absent from school for a period due to sickness.
