This Enrichment activity helps you to find an equation for finding day length for any time in the year at your line of latitude.

The data needed for this Activity can be obtained from the US Naval Observatory site.

Instructions for converting the data from the US Naval Observatory site into MS Excel format

  • Visit the link above.
  • Select the right Form.
  • Type the year into the box provided.
  • Select sunrise/sunset.
  • Type the place name of your location.
  • Beside Longitude click east or west and then enter the degrees and minutes of your location.
  • Beside Latitude click north or south and then enter the degrees and minutes of your location.
  • Type in your time zone.
  • Click "Compute Table".
You will be presented with a table of sunrise and sunset times. To get a copy of this table to use in Excel:
  • Using your browser, view the source of the page (in IE this is "View", "Source"; in Netscape this is "View", "Page Source").
  • Save the page as a text file format (e.g. "data.txt") to your working directory.
  • Next open MS Excel and open the text file. Just keep clicking "Next" until "Finish" appears. Click "Finish".
  • It should now be ready to work on.
  • Make sure that you save the file in Excel format.
