TECHLABS
This chapter refers to Techlabs 3.1 to Techlab 3.7 which are interactive java activities. Click the links below to work each activity.

  • Techlab 3.1 - angles as the rotation of a line about a point. (page 3-4)

  • Techlab 3.2 - angles have a constant sine, cosine, and tangent ratio. (page 3-5)

  • Techlab 3.3 - trig. ratios for 0o and 90o. (page 3-12)

  • Techlab 3.4 - how the height of a thumbtack changes as a wheel rotates. (page 3-14)

  • Techlab 3.5 - using a unit circle to find the trigonometric ratios. (page 3-15)

  • Techlab 3.6 - trigonometric ratios for special angles 0o, 90o, 180o, 270o, 360o. (page 3-17)

  • Techlab 3.7 - symmetry relationships in the unit circle. (page 3-18)

ENRICHMENT
There are references in this chapter to essays on the contributions of the Pythagoreans to mathematics. You can follow the links to each essay below, but if you are interested in trying to understand how the Pythagoreans started Western civilisation on the road to mathematics, I recommend that you start at MIC 3.1, the beginning.

  • MIC 3.2 - Pythagoras' theorem. There are two java demonstrations of the theorem. Activity 2 gives some insight into how Pythagoras may have developed his proof.

  • MIC 3.3 - Excellent java applet showing the graphs of trigonometric functions.
